CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Certification Guide (3rd Edition) unlike some Cisco Press publications, is well written and actually has a voice. Just being a CCIE isn't necessarily all the qualification required to pen a technical book--although you may think so if you can slog your way through some of the recommended texts for other certifications.

While not designed to teach the fundamentals of routing and switching, this Certification Guide is also useful as a reference source as it concisely provides a good level of detail for each of the topics covered.

As noted in other reviews, this edition does seem to have more than its share of typos but the online errata has been actively updated to correct most if not all of them.

I would definitely recommend this guide for all of you who have embarked on the journey towards the CCIE Routing and Switching certification.

How can a 3rd edition of a book have so many typos? Oh yeah, it's a Cisco Press book. Can you believe the first typo is on page xxxii? Table 1-1 is labeled "8-1". It makes me wonder how many more important topics have probs. Some of the text and the drawings don't jive either. Ref pages 74-75; Figure 3-7 shows three switches labeled SW1, SW2, SW3... the text refers to the "access switch". For the initiated this is SW3 but any editor worth his salt should have caught this. These are just two of many problems. You can't just use this book to pass the exam; you will need to enhance your understanding with the free Cisco doc online. I would also suggest loading up Dynagen so you have a way to see the commands in action.
BTW the Errata posted at Cisco Press only has three entries. They didn't catch any of the typos I mentioned or the error on page 111 in Figure 4-4 which shows the wrong mask for 172.31.24.0.... the list goes on and on.

Bottom line: A technical volume with this many typos and errors does not instill confidence needed to pass the exam. Good Luck!

I am in the process of studying for my CCIE Routing & Switching and I needed an updated version on the Cisco Press and I like buying from Amazon vs buying at a book store. As much as possible I try to avoid buying at the book store because of limited selection. Amazon provided me a reasonable price with excellent delivery date and tracking. Awesome job! Keep up the good work with excellent security transactions. For those of you seeking certifications for self-study, I recommend Amazon.com, the only way to go for books whether it's leisure, educational, or professional reading. RM

I agree with the previous posts regarding the errors in the book. I spent too much time trying to figure out if a discrepancy was mine or theirs. It's complicated my recertification studying.

The errata on the Cisco Press web site are horribly incomplete. It's almost as if the editors only reviewed the MPLS section.

I don't have any experience with other study guides (or previous editions of this guide), but I would avoid this book.

I love this book by Wendell Odom and I just passed the CCIE Written Exam last month as a result of it well that I and I had to read it.

Clear and concise. The book is to the point.

As a 4x CCIE RS Lab attendee... I can tell you there are a lot of Nuggest that anyone can find extremely helpful for the CCIE Lab itself between these covers.

Thanks again Wendell.

Sincerely,
